We are a proud affiliate of Regional JAM (jamkids.org)
The Mission of Transylvania County JAM is to provide free, informal, fun and engaging classes for kids that teach traditional Appalachian mountain music. We offer classes to kids age 9-18 in a variety of instruments and levels, from beginner fiddle, banjo, guitar, ukulele, and mandolin to intermediate and advanced string band classes that focus on performance.
Our top priority is to ensure learning traditional music is free and accessible to all

JAM Discovery
We usually start kids out in what we call JAM Discovery. In this short class, we teach the core tunes of the program by ear through singing, so it will be much easier for the students to learn them later on whichever instrument they choose. They also get to learn about and get their hands on each instrument we teach in the program: fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and even the upright bass! They learn a little bit about dancing, and Appalachian music and culture in general, and how it all fits together. Our Discovery Class is a super fun and interactive way to begin JAM and a lifelong music journey.
Some of our more advanced students want to help pass along the gift of music and have the option to become interns and student-teachers. We help give them the tools to become successful instructors and leaders.
Haden (L), an instructor with JAM, was a student in JAM for 8 years before she started student teaching. Aria (R) is a current student in JAM.

One of the most rewarding aspects of JAM is to see new friendships being formed between students, teachers, family members, board members and community members.
As our students advance, they have the option of joining a performance ensemble so that they learn how to play music together in a band setting.
